THE NEED

In 2021 HARMAN revamped their automotive strategy and began creating their own products, including Ready Vision - a windshield heads-up display (HUD) that leverages augmented reality (AR) to provide drivers with an immersive in-cabin experience.

To guide this first endeavor into product design, HARMAN needed to understand the driver’s perspective including

  • Identifying, designing, and implementing features that would support situation awareness and encourage safety

  • Understanding driver needs and pain points

  • Defining the desired user experience of drivers

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

3 feature focused generative research studies.

Each study included diary studies with 30-35 participants and co-creation sessions with 10 participants.

Studies focused on Navigation, Safety, and Holistic System Features.

IMPACT + OUTCOMES

  • Defined desired experiences based on user needs to inform the design and implementation for 14 features

  • Created content distribution guidelines and UX Strategy for the AR HUD Design

  • Provided user perspective to drive the strategy for 3 future product roadmaps including the next generation of AR HUD, a FRIT windshield display, and an AI/ML driven feature set

  • Informed the company strategy for approaching Virtual Personal Assistants and Voice Integration
